Yamaha Motor Launches Two New Surface Mounters – The Σ-F8S High-Speed Mounter with 5% Improved Effective Takt Time and the Z:LEX YSM20W with Expanded PCB Adaptability

Iwata, January 7, 2016 – Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 7272) today announced that two new surface mounters*¹ will be launched in the first quarter of 2016. The premium modular Σ (Sigma)-F8S will be introduced on April 1, and the high-efficiency modular Z:LEX YSM20W will be available from February 1.
The new Σ-F8S, a model in the premium modular "Σ" series, is an evolutionary development of the existing Σ-F8. The current model employs a rotary direct-drive head to achieve 150,000 CPH*² (under optimal conditions), the world's fastest level. The Σ-F8S achieves an effective 5% improvement in average productivity compared to the existing version, and its improved mounting accuracy enables this new model to handle very small 0201 (0.25 × 0.125 mm) chip components.
The second new model, the Z:LEX YSM20W, retains the flexibility and efficiency across a range of different production conditions, as well as the same high-speed performance, component handling, and scalability as the high-efficiency Z:LEX YSM20 mounter. In addition, the Z:LEX YSM20W is a wide-body model that features significantly improved PCB adaptability and can accommodate extra-large PCBs larger than L-size*³, and can handle PCBs larger than M-size in dual-lane production.
The new Σ-F8S and Z:LEX YSM20W will be exhibited at the 45th INTERNEPCON Japan trade show for electronics manufacturing and surface mount technology (SMT), to be held from January 13–15, 2016, at Tokyo Big Sight (Ariake, Koto-ku, Tokyo).
*¹ Surface mounter: Production equipment designed to mount various electrical components onto PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) and incorporate them into electronic products.
*² CPH (Chips Per Hour): The total number of chips that can be mounted per hour (per unit of time). Indicates processing capability under various conditions.
*³ L-size = 510 mm × 460 mm, M-size = 330 mm × 250 mm. Both sizes are Yamaha Motor standards.

In recent years, miniaturization, higher density, higher functionality, diversification, and shortened product life cycles have increasingly accelerated across a wide range of products, such as consumer electronics, personal computers, and mobile phones. The new version of the Z:LEX series, the YSM20W, offers production efficiency and flexibility in multiple formats without requiring head changes, thanks to the "1 Head Solution" concept. This new model is a wide-body version of the Z:LEX YSM20 general-purpose modular mounter, which provides high speed and versatility at a superior level. It is now capable of handling ultra-large PCBs for automotive products, industrial, medical, power supply equipment, LED lighting, and more, with significantly increased adaptability to PCB size and weight. In addition, the dual-lane specification provides mass production benefits for dual-lane production, and it is capable of handling not only small PCB workpieces for small mobile devices, but also PCBs larger than M-size.

Σ-F8S: New Features
Improved XY-axis design enhances productivity and accuracy
By adopting a logic-based XY drive axis design modification, introducing advanced control technology, and employing a non-fixed linear motor, the head support beam is lighter in weight with reduced vibration. As a result, effective takt time is improved by 5%.
